Annual Reception in Pittsburgh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Professional Counseling Fund Executive Committee and faithful sponsors are happy to announce our annual reception and fundraiser. This yearly event has been successful in celebrating and promoting counselor issues. Mental Health Parity, The California Coalition for Counselor Licensure, and of course Medicare coverage for Licensed Counselors, have all been a focus for us. The first two have met with success and we continue to make counselor Medicare acceptance a priority. Here is where we hope to see all of you and please invite your friends.
Critical Time for Legislation and Professional Counselors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Health care reform is at a critical crossroads, and it's incredibly important to the counseling profession that it finally happen this year. Prior to the Massachusetts special election, in which Republican Scott Brown won, health care reform was moving steadily closer to enactment, potentially including Medicare coverage of licensed professional counselors. Since Republicans are in lock step opposing health insurance reform, Senate Democrats now no longer have the 60 votes necessary to take up a bill like the one it passed in December. Ironically, Massachusetts is the only state to have enacted broad health care reform legislation, and as a state senator Scott Brown voted for this bill.
The Professional Counseling Fund will be attending a fundraiser for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to express our commitment to enacting health reform legislation---including Medicare coverage of counselors---this year. We'd also like to ask for counselors to take action: if your Representative or Senator is a Democrat, please contact him or her to ask that they get the ball over the goal line on major health care reform. We still need health care reform, despite the outcome of a single special election.
PCF is also turning its attention to education policy affecting school counselors. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act is up for reauthorization this year, and could significantly impact school counselors and their environment. We'll be supporting education policy leaders and school counseling supporters at events shortly.
We hope this information is of interest, and we thank you for your support. Please click on our website or call the number below to make a contribution to the fund.
